The Road Less Traveled
Nicaragua's remote Northwest - a ticket to isolation!
Head to the authentic colonial city of Leon, Nicaragua’s cultural headquarters, before enjoying the beaches of the southern Pacific coast. The home of Nicaragua’s best museums, oldest learning centres, and finest churches, Leon is the intellectual heart of Nicaragua (if not Central America). The most authentically colonial Spanish city in the country, Leon is surrounded by volcanoes and the Pacific Rim is truly visible here, with great opportunities for “volcano boarding”, the new adrenaline sport sweeping… well sweeping northwest Nicaragua! 20 minutes out of town you’ll hit some of the best surfing in the region on the deserted beaches of Poneloya. You’ll stay at Hotel El Convento in the heart of León, on the site of the former San Francisco Convent. Its colonial buildings and lush gardens offer a unique atmosphere while you soak up the history oozing out of these ancient streets.
While in Leon you’ll visit the historical ruins of “Leon Viejo” settled by Lake Managua and capital of the Province of Nicaragua during the colonial time. Due to its rich pre-Hispanic history and great importance during the colonial period the ruins of Leon Viejo were declared by UNESCO a World heritage site. You’ll also have a chance to explore the current town of Leon on a fun and informative walking tour. Wind through the narrow streets and get a feel for the town’s history.
Next, you’ll head south to Morgan’s Rock near the thriving town of San Juan del Sur. This Hacienda and Ecolodge is set on an 1800-hectare property complete with a tropical forest nature reserve and animal sanctuary. With lots to explore and plenty of relaxation to be had this is a luxury destination you can feel good about.
After a few days on the beach, you’ll transfer back to Managua for your last night. Los Robles is a 14 room boutique hotel in a converted Spanish colonial villa near to the center of Managua in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in town. Enjoy your last evening in one of the many great restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel.
