Granada Hotels
Founded in 1524, Granada is the oldest European city on the American mainland, and its baking hot, tropical streets ooze history. Located on the northeastern shore of Lake Nicaragua and overseen by the looming Mombacho Volcano with its cloud-forested slopes, as well as access to Masaya Volcano and the cooling waters of the Laguna de Apoyo, Granada and its surrounds pretty much is the center of the tourism scene in Nicaragua, and arguably offers more to see and do from one place than any other part of the country.
It’s a very small city, with a colonial heart that’s easy to walk around. In this heart, centered around the Cathedral and Central Park, you’ll find a number of restored colonial homes and mansions that are now boutique hotels, such as the stately Casa del Consulado, the luxurious Plaza Colon and the home away from home that is Patio del Malinche, among others. All the hotels here are within minutes walk of each other and also of the burgeoning bar and restaurant scene in the city. You’ll find your favorite, for sure!
Just out of town, on the lake, there lie 365 little islands, or “Isletas“, formed around 20,000 years ago when Mombacho Volcano blew its top. See the jagged top of Mombacho (you will when you’re here!)? The rest of it are these islands… Nowadays the Isletas are home to some of Nicaragua’s elite, who come to relax on their private islands, as well as local fishing communities and also the unique Jicaro Island Ecolodge, offering you the chance to stay out here.
All in all, Granada and its surrounding area is a must-do when coming to Nicaragua. It’s almost a crime to come and NOT visit this area. These hotels will offer you the best in hospitality, whatever your tastes are, when you do visit.
