South Pacific Hotels
The Southern Pacific Coast of Nicaragua is considered that stretch of coastline from Pochomil, close to the capital Managua, all the way down through Carazo and Rivas Departments to the Costa Rican border. It is where the bulk of beach tourism in Nicaragua is located, and where the majority of South Pacific hotels, condo projects, real estate developments and resorts are starting to spring up. There’s even a name for this area – “The Emerald Coast” – names for the verdant green hills of the area that are prominent during the May-November rainy season.
That’s not to say that it’s still not pristine. From pounding surf (this is one of the best surfing areas in the world due to the offshore winds coming off nearby Lake Nicaragua) to hidden coves boasting white sand beaches and tranquil waters this coastline offers the best in a beach vacation. Fishing, sailing, horseback riding and as mentioned above, surfing, are all staples here, in this land of year round sunshine. You also have easy access to the lake for water skiing and wake boarding opportunities, if you’re more into your adventurous water sports.
The main town here is San Juan del Sur, a ramshackle but charming fishing village about two hours from Managua. Local fishermen whose families have been working these waters for generations, coexist side by side with the newer surf implants and other expats arriving to set up spas, yoga centers, restaurants and bars. A stay here, in either the town’s own Pelican Eyes Resort or the boutique La Posada Azul, offers the visitor all the amenities of beach town life, with restaurants, bars, shopping and easy access to excursions. Outside of town, you’re a little more isolated, and that works well if you’re interested in nature at Morgan’s Rock, nurturing at Aqua Wellness, or even that ultimate luxury experience at Mukul.
